Hybrid cars were first thought of in the late 1800's, but not for the purpose of saving gas, but to allow a car to go from 0-25 miles per hour in 10 seconds flat. However, by the time that the patent was issued three years later, cars could do that, so the idea went away. People also toyed with the idea overseas, but we are still where we are today.
